Perry Mason Returns

The Perry Mason franchise was resurrected in 1985 by producer Dean Hargrove who developed a series of television films for NBC. The two surviving major stars, Raymond Burr and Barbara Hale, reprised their roles as Perry Mason and Della Street. In fact, Raymond Burr agreed to do the films upon the condition that Barbara Hale would also return as his loyal confidential secretary. Return she did—as a defendant! In the first film, Perry Mason Returns, Perry resigns his position as an appellate court judge to defend Della on a murder charge. Barbara Hale's real-life son, William Katt, portrayed private investigator Paul Drake, Jr., the son of William Hopper's character in the original television series. William Katt appeared in the first nine movies.

A total of 30 movies were produced between 1985 and 1995. Raymond Burr starred in the first 26, but died in September 1993 after completing The Case of the Killer Kiss. Ironically, this film was based on the final episode of the original Perry Mason series.

The producers opted to keep the Perry Mason character alive in the final four movies. Actors Paul Sorvino and Hal Holbrook starred as lawyers and close friends of Perry, who was ostensibly out of the office. The post-Raymond Burr episodes were entitled A Perry Mason Mystery. Barbara Hale once again reprised her role as Della Street, appearing in a small cameo in the final film. William R. Moses returned as law student Ken Malansky, who had joined the cast after William Katt's departure.

Television and film composer Fred Steiner arranged the theme music, "Park Avenue Beat," a piece he had composed for the original Perry Mason series. The music was re-recorded by famed mystery composer Dick DeBenedictis and featured a cymbal crash between the ominous introduction and the main theme.

Throughout his life, Raymond Burr was a well-known philanthropist. He gave enormous sums of money to charity, including his earnings from the Perry Mason movies.

Ray Collins (Lt. Arthur Tragg)
There is nothing but kindness from our star, Ray Burr. Part of his life is dedicated to us, and that's no bull. If there's anything the matter with any of us, he comes around before anyone else and does what he can to help. He's a great star—in the old tradition.
