America's Favorite Television Lawyer
Perry Mason ran for nine seasons, from September 1957 to May 1966. During that time there were 271 episodes produced, beginning with "The Case of the Restless Redhead," which starred Whitney Blake, and ending with "The Case of the Final Fadeout." The series finale featured an all-star cast, as well as several of the show's longtime crew members. Erle Stanley Gardner himself appeared as a judge!
Since 2006, full-length, uncut Perry Mason episodes have been released by CBS DVD (distributed by Paramount). This has ignited a renewed interest in the most popular legal television series of all time. The original episodes were 53 minutes long. As many as ten minutes were cut to accommodate commercials in various syndicated versions. Indeed, the showed has aired continuously since 1957. Fans have been pleasantly surprised by the uncut episodes, most of which contain critical scenes that ended up on the cutting room floor.
Perry Mason Movie Collection
In 1985, the Perry Mason franchise was resurrected by producer Dean Hargrove who developed a series of TV movies for NBC. Raymond Burr and Barbara Hale, the only two surviving major stars, reprised their roles as Perry Mason and Della Street. Raymond Burr agreed to do the films upon the condition that Barbara Hale would also return as his secretary. In the first film, Perry Mason Returns, Perry must defend Della on a murder charge. Barbara Hale's real-life son, William Katt, joined the cast as private investigator Paul Drake, Jr., the son of William Hopper's character in the original television series. William Katt appeared in the first nine Perry Mason movies.
